Apple's Senior Vice President talks about exit from Intel processors: "Intel chips do not yet deliver the performance we need"

The reason Apple does not use Intel processors in Mac products

Of course, the Mac is not the first product with the chip developed by Apple itself, but the iPhone is arguably the most prominent example. The first iPhones did not use the Apple A chip we know, instead iPhone and iPod Touch models released between 2007 and 2009 used SoC (System on a Chip) designed and manufactured by Samsung according to Apple's specifications.
In 2010, Apple switched to its first self-developed chip, the Apple A4, which was used in the first generation iPad, iPhone 4, fourth generation iPod Touch and second generation Apple TV. This is also the basis that motivated Apple to leave Intel and switch to self-developed chips.
Apple and Intel have had a long-standing cooperative relationship since Apple switched to Intel CPUs for the MacBook Pro and iMac in 2006, but differences in development trends between the two led to the termination of the collaboration. Inevitably. Intel's chip innovations stagnated while Apple accelerated the development of its product lines.
So far, after three years of switching the Mac to the M chip, Apple has reaped the fruits of its decision. Until the latest chip series, the M3 series, Apple products were always considered to be particularly powerful in relation to power consumption, helping Apple to develop powerful laptops that still have an attractive design.
Using self-developed chips helps Apple not only launch thin and light MacBook models, but also desktop products such as the iMac and Mac Studio, which have impressive performance but still have an attractive design.
It is clear that Apple has achieved great success by moving away from Intel to self-designed chips. After a long wait, Apple finally announced a new Mac Pro version equipped with the M2 Ultra chip in the middle of this year. This also means that the transition to Apple Silicon is now complete and the company no longer sells Intel Macs.
This success also brings tougher competition from Intel, a former partner that is now a rival of Apple. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said Intel is on track to return to the top, adding that in the future its CPUs will be as powerful and energy efficient as the best CPUs on the market, including those made by Apple. But one thing is undeniable: Apple's bold decision to abandon Intel helped take the chip industry to new heights and create tougher competition to deliver the best products to customers.
